FAQ

  • What is my involvement as a parent?

  • Parents are encouraged to enjoy their child's development as an athlete and a good teammate. Bring a book to read at practice, or bring good shoes and help shag (maybe wear an excercise tracker). Players are encouraged to stay in parents rooms at away trips when possible. It saves the family money and makes logisitics for things like showers much easier.

Your toughest job (besides writing a check) will be encouraging your child in a positive manner that makes them accountable for their performance and encourages them to resolve issues on their own. Teams have a much better culture if all the parents believe in the "it takes a village" theory.

  • What will the coaching be like?

  • NCAA Div I coaches will plan almost every practice. Skills will be taught in a way that the coaches have found to be most effective in dealing with athletes of all ages. All court/team coaches will apply the teaching methods similarly so there is no confusion as players get feedback from multiple coaches. Teams will play every practice. Teams MUST play the actual game as much as possible to learn to apply the skills they are learning in real-time.

There will be a heavy focus on teaching players accountability. Recent generations seem to want everything to be "someone else's fault". Getting better and succeeding has everything to do with how hard the player works and how fast they change as long as the coaching is good and there is ample opportunity for feedback. Accountable players become problem solvers and leaders in other facets of their lives.

Team/court coaches always have the opportunity to have discussions with the NCAA Div I coaches to further develop their skills. Coalition is as focused on producing good coaches as they are on teaching the game to players.

  • Ask
  • Why is Coalition different?

  • It's directed by former NCAA Division I coaches who want to improve the level of volleyball in our state as well as help create great coaches who want to learn more than just how to run drills.

Practices will be designed by a Master Coach and executed by the teams' head coaches. All the coaches will collaborate with all the teams in the gym. Instead of a one team, one coach mentality, some of practice will involve coaches with specialties working with all the players in that skill. Players will get to know more than one style and coaches get to work with most ofthe athletes in the club.

We are not profit motivated. It takes some money to run a quality program. To get good coaches for teams, you need to pay a fair rate. But beyond that, everything paid for is actual cost.

  • What should my expectations be?

  • Players who make a team can expect to learn an incredible amount about how to play the game and how to succeed on and off the court in a team setting.

Parents can expect consistent, high-level coaching with no tolerance for "drama". Communication will be frequent and clear.

  • What will it cost?

  • Costs will vary by team. Charges will be the minimum to include: gym rental, team coaches, uniform package, administration, and tournament costs including team entry fees, coach's flight, hotel and per diem. A player's travel and hotel costs are not included. An explicit breakdown of costs will be provided in your contract offer.

  • Ask
  • When will we practice?

  • Practices will be Tuesday and Thursday. Start times are either 5:30 pm or 7:30 pm. All practices will be in the newly renovated East Gym at the US Air Force Academy.

  • Have questions ?
  • Ask
  • Will we travel out of state?

  • Aside from the 12s and 13s, all teams will have at least one out of state tournament. However, the 1s teams will travel more, and further, than the 2s teams.

Team costs for tournaments will be divided amongst all players on the team and are included in club fees. These costs include: tournament entry fee, coach's flight, coach's hotel, coach's per diem, and coach's transportation. This is generally $150-$200 per player.

  • Have questions ?
  • Ask
  • I play a spring sport for high school, can I do both club and high school sports?

  • Yes yes yes! At Coalition, we know that playing multiple sports creates more well-rounded athletes who are not as prone to injuries and do not get burnt out as easily. Not only do we allow multi-sport athletes to play on our teams, we ENCOURAGE it. We want your athlete to play as many sports as they can for as long as they can (and want to!) so our coaches will make it work even if your player has to miss a couple of practices here and there. We just ask that you communicate any absences for the high school sport event as soon as possible so coaches can adjust practices or lineups for tournaments accordingly.
